Learn About Bed Bugs

What Are Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown insects that feed on human and animal blood. They’re about the size of an apple seed and are mostly active at night. While not known to spread diseases, their bites can cause itching, allergic reactions, and sleep disturbance. Bed bugs are expert hiders and can live for months without feeding, making them extremely hard to eliminate without proper knowledge.

How Do Bed Bugs Spread?

Bed bugs don’t jump or fly — they crawl from one place to another and often hitchhike through luggage, clothes, second-hand furniture, and even electronic items. High-traffic areas like hotels, dormitories, airports, and shared housing are common hotspots for bed bug transfer. Once they enter a space, they hide in cracks, mattresses, or behind wallpapers and can quickly multiply.
Bed bugs are highly resilient pests that can survive in a wide range of environments. They can live for several months without feeding, making it easy for them to stay hidden and unnoticed. Their flat bodies allow them to squeeze into tiny crevices—such as bed frames, baseboards, electrical outlets, and even the seams of clothing or backpacks—enabling them to spread silently and rapidly within homes, offices, and public spaces.

Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation

Some early warning signs include:

  • Small reddish-brown stains on bed sheets or mattresses

  • Itchy red bites, often in a line or cluster

  • Shed exoskeletons or tiny white eggs in mattress seams

  • A musty odor near sleeping areas
